Why You Should Clean Your Guns?

Posted by

As a responsible gun owner, there are certain things that you need to do for your weapons to ensure safety for you and those around you. Cleaning and maintaining are simple tasks to perform but they are extremely important . Anything that you own needs to be maintained to operate the way it was designed to operate.

Why clean your guns?

NRA’s gun safety rules states that:

Operate correctly and safely

  • Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely.
  • Accumulated moisture and dirt, or solidified grease and oil, can prevent the gun from operating properly.

Reliability

If you are using your gun for self-defense, it is extremely important that it works when you really need it. Therefore, cleaning the gun from the rust or crud in the barrel will be a lifesaver.

Remove moisture

If you are a hunter, you use your gun outdoors in a swamp, or in the rain so it is exposed to moisture. When the metal of the gun is exposed to moisture, it begins to oxidize and rust forms which can cause mishaps or the gun not working properly.

Extend gun’s life

  • Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life.
  • Simple cleaning and maintenance can make sure that your gun will last for generations, not just years.
  • Carbon buildup occurs in your weapon each and every time you fire it. When the propellant burns, it leaves carbon behind.

Clean every time

  • Your gun should be cleaned every time that it is used.
  • A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting.
  • Before cleaning your gun, make absolutely sure that it is unloaded.
  • The gun's action should be open during the cleaning process.
  • Be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area.

Learning about your gun

  • You may not know a lot about your weapon, but by cleaning, maintaining, oiling, lubricating, etc. it, you will learn all about your gun. Especially if you need to disassemble and put it back together, you will know your gun inside and out.
  • The easiest way to get familiar with your firearm is to clean it. The more you know about your gun, the better you will be able to repair it when something goes wrong.
