Gun storage and cleaning

If you live with other people in your home, it will be crucial for you to lock up your guns, keep the safety on and make sure you keep your firearms clean, so they work correctly when you need them.

Gun safety rules

The NRS has fundamental rules for safe gun handling. Here they are:

  • The primary rule of gun safety is to keep your gun pointed in a safe direction. Depending on the circumstances, common sense will help determine the safest direction.
  • Until you are ready to use your gun and fire, make sure that you do not touch the trigger. Keep your finger away from the trigger. While holding your gun, rest your finger outside of the trigger guard and alongside the frame.
  • Until you are ready to use your gun keep it unloaded. Leave your weapon alone until you can get help from someone if you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s).

Using a gun

Here are some additional NRA rules for safety when using or storing a firearm:

  • Do not use alcohol, over-the-counter drugs or prescription drugs before or while shooting.
  • Be trained in gun safety.
  • Know your target and beyond.
  • Be sure the gun is in working order and safe to operate.
  • Use the correct ammunition for your gun.
  • Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate.
  • Do not leave guns out to be accessible to unauthorized persons.
  • Make sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting.
  • Don’t modify or alter your gun.
  • Service your gun regularly.
  • Learn the mechanics of your firearms.

Target shooting and hunting can be safe sports if the rules are correctly followed. Teaching beginners, children and non-shooters the rules of safe gun handling will be in everyone's best interest. Enjoy your right to own a firearm in our country while being safe.
